I asked my mother – an actress – to reenact her mother who I barely knew. But she remembers very little. Mother of Mother recounts of scrappy memories and brittle family relationships of three generations, marked by absences and separations. Also by the effects of a war or, more generally, the influence of ideologies and conventions on conceptions of women’s and mothers’ roles and how these are being passed on and reflected. Daily life coined by those ideas is so unspectactular that it is perceived as normality.
Mutter von Mutter erzählt von meiner Mutter (Schauspielerin i.R.) und der ihren, die ich kaum gekannt habe. Von bruchstückhaften Erinnerungen und brüchigen Beziehungen dreier Generationen, die von Abwesenheiten und Trennungen bestimmt sind. Damit auch von den Auswirkungen eines Kriegs, jedenfalls denjenigen von Ideologien und Konventionen auf Vorstellungen von Frauen- und Mutterrollen und davon, wie diese Vorstellungen weitergegeben oder reflektiert werden. Der davon geprägte Alltag ist so unspektakulär, dass er als Normalität empfunden wird.
